On Tuesday, April 7, 2015, more than 2,630 mayors across the country pledged their support for national service as part of the 3rd annual Mayors Day of Recognition of National Service. This annual service day unites locally elected officials with community residents and corps members to harness the power of national service and highlight the positive impacts of civic engagement.

To celebrate, YouthBuild USA staff and VISTA members volunteered at the Arthur D. Healey School in Somerville, MA. Volunteers led science activities focused on teaching the plant life cycle and planting vegetables and flowers. They also worked in the school’s community garden and ran cooperative games with students. The day provided a great opportunity to strengthen existing relationships with the Somerville public school system and engage in direct service with the community.
