YouthBuild Supporters Celebrate Global YouthBuild Day 2016
YouthBuild students, graduates, staff, and supporters spanning multiple continents joined together in celebrating Global YouthBuild Day last Wednesday. YouthBuild programs participated in the advocacy day by holding events and organizing service projects in communities around the world.
In Los Angeles, hundreds of young people and supporters from local YouthBuild programs kicked off the celebration by marching through downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday. The group also held a rally outside of a Board of Supervisors meeting where LA County Supervisor and former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis joined the young people to voice her support for YouthBuild.
Programs across the United States participated in a variety of service projects such as packing and distributing food for local food banks, building and fixing structures at community gardens, and making repairs and home modifications for local veterans.
In Canton, Ohio, Saint Gobain and Project Rebuild held a ceremony to officially launch their partnership and to show progress on their current project, renovating a dilapidated home. During the event, Canton Mayor Thomas Bernabei voiced his support for the project and officially declared the day “Global YouthBuild Day”. Students from Project Rebuild spent part of the day working alongside Saint Gobain employees to complete tasks such as tearing down a wall and removing concrete.
Participation from YouthBuild International sites made this year's celebration of YouthBuild Day particularly special.
Participants of Jóvenes Constructores in Panama cleaned and repainted a basketball court at youth center in Pacora, Panama. Young people from Stara Zagora, Bulgaria had the chance to meet with staff from local government in order to learn about how government functions.
