YouthBuild Students Gather for the 20th Annual Massachusetts YouthBuild Day
On Thursday, March 19, 2015, representatives from the 11 YouthBuild programs across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts met at the Massachusetts State House for the 20th Annual Massachusetts YouthBuild Day. The goal of the event was to give staff and participants from Massachusetts YouthBuild programs a chance to request support from their state legislators.
YouthBuild students gathered inside of the House Chambers of the State House during the first half of the day to hear presentations from other YouthBuild programs and from special guests.
In the opening remarks for the ceremony, Massachusetts Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Ronald L. Walker II voiced support for the YouthBuild movement saying, “(The Baker Administration) will be looking at the YouthBuild model to find ways to put young people to work.”
Throughout the event, YouthBuild students stood behind the chamber podium to lead recitations of their YouthBuild pledges and deliver speeches about their experiences in YouthBuild.
Massachusetts YouthBuild Day also featured addresses from State Representative Gloria Fox, State Senator Sal DiDomenico, and Brian McPherson, of Suffolk Construction Company.
The students finished the day by traveling throughout the State House to meet with law makers in order to advocate on behalf of their respective programs and the YouthBuild movement.
The 11 YouthBuild sites that took part in the event are collectively represented by the Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition. The programs joined together in 1996 in an effort to provide advocacy support for their programs and to create a unifying voice for the YouthBuild movement in the state.
