Rural YouthBuilder Participates in Congressional Briefing
On May 12, 2015, Sharell Harmon, a student at YouthBuild North Central West Virginia and member of the YouthBuild USA Young Leaders Council, participated in a Congressional briefing on “Technology Transitions” and affordable broadband.
The briefing was organized by Edyael Casaperalta and sponsored by the Public Knowledge and the National Rural Assembly. Casaperalta and Harmon met at the YouthBuild USA National Rural Youth Caucus in March, where they attended a meeting at the FCC and compiled a set of recommendations with the entire Rural Caucus regarding the inclusion of broadband in the Lifeline program. Harmon shared these recommendations with the Congressional staffers and lobbyists in attendance at the briefing in May, along with her personal experience with the Lifeline telephone program and her passionate advocacy for the role broadband access plays in helping rural youth achieve their dreams.
