NAC President Jamiel Alexander Honored as a National Service Advocate of the Year
On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, members of the national service community from around the country gathered in Washington, D.C. for Voices for National Service’s 12th annual Friends of National Service award ceremony. National Alumni Council president Jamiel Alexander was honored as a National Service Advocate of the Year during the event.
Jamiel Alexander and co-honoree Nicole Schmidt were both selected to receive the award after receiving thousands of online votes in support of their work to help raise public awareness of the importance of national service.
Jamiel is a graduate of Crispus Attucks YouthBuild Charter School in York Pennsylvania and is an AmeriCorps alum. After completing the program, Jamiel began working at the school as the Manager of Youth and Family Programs, giving him the opportunity to organize workshops for young people and their families and coordinate community service efforts for students at the school.
In addition to his work with the National Alumni Council, Jamiel currently serves on the Advisory Council for Opportunity Youth Network and the National Council of Young Leaders, both efforts focused on bringing the issues of low-income youth and communities to the forefront of national discussion.
The event also honored a selection of elected officials, corporate entities, and journalists for their work in promoting service and encouraging the implementation of service-oriented policies.
