At the end of 2015, Congress enacted and the President signed an $84.5 million appropriation for the DOL YouthBuild program for Fiscal Year 2016. In doing so, Congress was responding positively to the efforts by YouthBuild’s champions in Congress -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in the Senate, and in House of Representatives Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) and Congressman Bob Dold (R-IL). While the current appropriation remains well below the $102.5 million appropriation for the DOL YouthBuild program funded in FY2011, the bi-partisan support for the most recent increase of 6.1% above the prior year’s funding is a positive sign of the growing understanding that YouthBuild addresses critical needs facing millions of the low income young adults who come to YouthBuild – the nation’s opportunity youth.
