YouthBuild Cluj Students

In 2013, the C.S. Mott Foundation, the Cluj Community Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity Cluj worked with YouthBuild International to adapt the YouthBuild model to the culture of the ancient Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca. In 2015, the pilot program launched with 35 Roma men and women from the village of Pata Rat, a forced resettlement site on a waste dump following the Cluj mayor forceable relocated an entire Roma neighborhood. Participants gained construction skills and credentials and helped to build social housing for the families living in Pata Rat. The students completed several Community Asset Building (CAB) projects including the reconstruction of an outdoor amphitheater in Cluj.

YouthBuild Cluj will launch another program in early 2017 with YBI’s global partner Saint Gobain, the French construction supplier. This partnership will include a Saint Gobain YouthBuild Academy—modeled on the original in South Africa—that will provide training and credentialing in specific trades with a direct pathway into work.
