In 2016, YouthBuild International's (YBI) partner in Central America, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) began implementing the Strong Youth, Safe Communities Program, a comprehensive and integrated program, serving rural, urban, and peri-urban at-risk youth and their families.
The Strong Youth, Safe Communities Program is designed to expand the Jóvenes Constructores program based on the previous success of implementing the adapted YB model in El Salvador. In Guatemala, the program is implemented through a local partner organization, EPRODEP, and is being financed in Ciudad Quetzal by the US Department of State in Guatemala.
The program will enroll 255 at-risk youth, ages 16 to 25 residing in Ciudad Quetzal, a community within metropolitan Guatemala City, with the goal of guiding at-risk youth toward healthy lives and sustainable livelihoods while strengthening communities and governments and fostering opportunities for youth and their families. To date the Jóvenes Constructores program has implemented two cohorts and has enrolled 124 young people.
YouthBuild will provide direct technical assistance to EPRODEP and CRS on all aspects of the YouthBuild program, including consultation, training and youth livelihood systems design.
