With support from the United States Department of State, Embassy in Costa Rica, YouthBuild International and its local partner, Fundación Paniamor, implemented Jóvenes Construyendo Limon (JCL) project in 2016. The JCL initiative creates pathways for leadership, learning and placement opportunities for youth (ages 16 to 24) living in Limon, a port city along the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica.
Graduates of the program receive three months of follow-up and personal support to ensure a successful transition from the program into productive livelihood opportunities. These include returning to formal school, a continuation of technical training, self-employment, internship placement and employment in the formal sector. To date, the JCL program has enrolled 110 young people from five different communities in Limon, engaging them in small-scale infrastructure projects in the Central District of Limon as a way for them to exercise their leadership skills.
Also in 2016, YouthBuild International has been granted a four-year award from the U.S Department of Labor's Bureau of International Labor Affairs (DOL-ILAB) with Fundacion Paniamor, YBI will work to improve country capacity to provide work-palce based training programs and apprenticeships to vulnerable and marginalized youth in Costa Rica.
