Alexis' story

Alexis has realized she is smarter than she thought.

Alexis has wanted to be a nurse since she was 13 years old. Today, she is enrolled in YouthBuild Jackson in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky where she is starting her journey to be the registered nurse that she has always wanted to be. But her path has not always been headed in this direction.

Probation and problems in high school led to her decision to leave before receiving her diploma. Facing stereotypes of people in Jackson where some, “Seem to think that everyone – is either a drug addict or a thief,” said Alexis, “A lot of us aren’t. A lot of us are really good people but people tend to not give us a chance.” Alexis found her chance in YouthBuild.

Alexis enrolled in YouthBuild Jackson on the same day she left high school. Passing the GED exam in the first try, she enrolled in college while serving her community as a YouthBuild AmeriCorps member.

When I got to YouthBuild I thought, hey maybe I am smarter than what I thought.
