4th Annual Instructional Leadership Institute

August 3-5, 2009
Boston, MA

The YouthBuild USA Education Department is excited to announce the fourth annual Instructional Leadership Institute. For the past three years, YouthBuild USA has conducted the Instructional Leadership Institute as a training activity to respond to the most pressing needs of instructional leaders – including lead teachers, principals/education managers and program directors. The Instructional Leadership Institute remains an integral part of ongoing whole school improvement efforts to improve student learning and related outcomes and now includes both the National Schools Initiative (NSI) and the Postsecondary Education Initiative (PSE).

YouthBuild sites participating in the NSI and PSE initiatives are focusing necessary time and attention on the core instructional relationships between students and educators to improve the academic content knowledge, skills and behaviors that YouthBuild students need to complete postsecondary education and obtain meaningful career credentials. Both initiatives support efforts to ensure relevant instruction which integrates occupational and core academic content, provides opportunities for experiential learning, incorporates technology throughout the curriculum, deepens critical thinking skills, establishes a strong culture of reading, writing and numeracy and aligns well with college entry requirements.

The Instructional Leadership Institute is designed to support your efforts in creating a school climate and culture which promotes these ambitious teaching and learning objectives. The Institute will highlight effective and promising instructional leadership practices being implemented by YouthBuild schools across the country and by external experts and practitioners achieving impressive student learning results in other alternative high school settings.

2009 Institute Focus

This year’s Institute is being planned in conjunction with Northeastern University’s School of Education. The institute will include an interactive staff mapping process, during which participants will discuss, prioritize and document the most pressing professional knowledge and technical practice needs within their respective schools. Other presentations and discussions will focus on instructional approaches/practices for 1) promoting a culture of numeracy based on real world mathematical applications for young people and 2) differentiating instruction in ways that are responsive to the range of learning and developmental needs within the YouthBuild context

We believe that these sessions address areas of potential growth across NSI and PSE schools and programs and we look forward to seeing your Principals and Instructional Leadership staff during these 2.5 days of peer learning and sharing.

Who Should Attend

In keeping with our commitment to conduct role-alike meetings which enable us to delve deeper into the work and decrease the travel burden for site staff to attend all education initiative gatherings, we are inviting Principals/Education Managers and Instructional Leaders/Lead Teachers to attend this conference. Given our focus on numeracy, math teachers are also welcome to attend the event. We hope that each site will send at least two representatives from your site if possible.

2009 Learning Sessions

Session ONE: Interactive Staff Mapping Process
This interactive staff-mapping exercise will help participants consider, discuss, prioritize and document the most pressing professional knowledge and technical practice needs within their respective school sites. The conversational session will start with the unique realities of individual school programs and build toward the creation of plans that participants can take home and use to guide their work.

Session TWO: Promoting a Culture of Numeracy
This session will present a number of instructional leadership strategies and pedagogical approaches for building a stronger culture of numeracy within YouthBuild schools and programs. Participants will discuss specific strategies for student-centered teaching approaches which apply a range of mathematical concepts and functions to relevant contexts for YouthBuild students.

Session THREE: Differentiating Instruction
This session will respond to the need to differentiate instruction for YouthBuild students in ways that more fully embrace their unique learning styles and abilities. The session will present and consider promising instructional strategies for providing appropriate academic remediation, acceleration and preparation for diverse learners (including SPED, ELL and low-level readers) to not only graduate, but also succeed in postsecondary credential programs. Participants will discuss their own experiences in implementing many of these approaches for differentiating instruction.
