YouthBuild Health-Care Initiative
YouthBuild programs are increasingly recognizing the value of health-care training in creating career and educational pathways for young people. Through the YouthBuild Health-Care Initiative, YouthBuild USA seeks to help YouthBuild programs as they conceptualize, develop, and implement their own health-care training and exploration programs.
YouthBuild programs that offer health-care training not only meet the desires of students not interested in construction as a career path, but also create alternative career opportunities in communities where the construction industry may not be able to absorb all YouthBuild graduates.
Providing students access to careers in this important industry is fundamentally consistent with YouthBuild’s historic commitment to social justice and service to the community. Americans need good and affordable health care, and the need is especially high in low-income communities. YouthBuild programs becoming involved in the health-care sector can only serve to strengthen it, and YouthBuild students embracing this ever-expanding service profession can be on another viable path to developing leadership while moving out of poverty.
The centerpiece of the YouthBuild Health-Care Initiative is the YouthBuild Health-Care Service and Training Manual. This manual, developed by YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School, presents a case study of YouthBuild Philadelphia’s own successful nurse aid training program, as well as field-tested guidance for YouthBuild programs seeking to launch their own health-care–related training programs.
The Wal-Mart Foundation inspired and funded the production of the manual and funded several YouthBuild programs as they started or expanded their own health-care career tracks. We appreciate and applaud the Wal-Mart Foundation’s commitment to the employability of low-income young women and men in the health-care field.

Tuesdays with Morrie discussion questions and vocabulary lists.
During the application process for YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School's nurse aide certification program, the students participate in activities and exercises aimed at increasing their self-awareness, empathy, compassion, comfort with each other, and interpersonal communication skills.
As outlined on page 19 of the YouthBuild Health-Care Service and Career Training Manual, one set of activities (designed by nurse aide coordinator Tesla DuBois) includes reading Tuesdays with Morrie over the course of several weeks.
After a select amount of pages are read each week, the applicants complete reflection sheets (about the readings) as a homework assignment, and then discuss their reflections in the following meeting. Each week, applicants also receive a list of health-care-related vocabulary words, with brief definitions, drawn from the book. The students are not expected to memorize the words, but they are encouraged to be familiar with the words and have a general understanding of their meanings.
