Courses Offered (choose one)

Connecting with Your Regional Workforce System
This course will focus on strategies for connecting YouthBuild sites to their regional workforce systems. In particular, the course will provide an orientation to regional workforce development; an understanding of how YouthBuild can contribute to and benefit from being a part of the system; and strategies for positioning YouthBuild programs in their own regional workforce systems.

Facilitator: Adrienne Smith

Dual Customer Service Approaches
Career Developers often serve as a bridge between two “customers”: youth and employers. In this course career development professionals and directors will learn how to connect with the high demand industries in your region and to understand precisely the skill and talents they are searching for. Participants will then discuss how to design programs that both meet the needs of the young people and the employers that would hire them.

Facilitator: TBD

Leadership Development in YouthBuild
Thirty years ago, before leadership development became a buzzword in youth work, the seed of the YouthBuild model was doing engaged leadership work with young people in East Harlem. One of the models they developed was the Policy Committee; a structured way to build leadership skills, while improving the quality of the program. Come learn practices that have been refined in hundreds of cities across America. In this dynamic, experiential and practical course, you’ll learn how to make leadership development the central core for achieving education, civic engagement, career, and personal goals for young people.

Facilitators: Khepe-Ra Maat & Julian Ramirez, Education Should Help Us Collective (ESHU) and YouthBuild graduates

Home Builders Institute PACT Certification Training
YouthBuild Construction Trainers who participate will be certified to offer this industry recognized and validated Pre-apprenticeship Certificate to graduating students. Included in this session will be the various curricula support materials along with segments on lesson planning, the design of effective training stations, the instructor's role in job placement, job site safety management and a preview of the re-validated & computer based revision of the PACT.

Facilitators:
John Hattery, Director, Home Builders Institute
Steve Cousins, Program Manager, Home Builders Institute

About YouthBuild Boston

YouthBuild Boston empowers young people. Our academic and vocational training programs reopen closed doors to opportunity and extend the scope of possibilities. We serve young people, ages 14-24, addressing the various barriers they face. As the underserved become the stewards of their communities, we all become stronger.

YouthBuild Boston's construction training program teaches Boston's 18-24-year-old unemployed and unskilled young people to renovate abandoned buildings into affordable housing for low-income families. YouthBuild Boston offers these young people a second chance to obtain the educational, occupational, social, and leadership skills they need to assume full responsibility for themselves and their families. As a private, non-profit, community-based organization, YouthBuild Boston is committed to helping a population too often described by the negative statistics of poverty, crime and violence.

YouthBuild Boston offers participants the opportunity to transform both their lives and their community. YBB is a multidisciplinary program that addresses the academic, vocational, job training and personal/social needs and interests of participants. Participants can acquire the academic credentials as well as the construction training skills necessary for them to become self-sufficient contributing members of society.

YouthBuild Boston's activities take place in two arenas-the school site and the work site, through which participants rotate on a biweekly basis. The school site consists of four components:

  • Academics- Students can pursue either their GED or receive a high school diploma through the External Diploma Program of the Boston Public Schools
  • Vocational education- Students learn the theory and core construction skills in YouthBuild Boston's vocational education facilities. In conjunction with the North Bennett Street School, students have the opportunity to take electives such as carpentry preservation and locksmithing
  • Life skills- Staff expose students to a variety of classes such as finance and budgeting, goal setting, resume writing, interview skills, problem-solving techniques that better prepare students to take responsibility for themselves and their family
  • Counseling- Staff provides one-on-one counseling for each participant in which they assist in goal setting, identifying barriers to success and overcoming challenges.

The work site is where the students put theory into practice and perform their community service hours as AmeriCorps members. Under the tutelage of three construction instructors, students renovate an abandoned property into a habitable dwelling for low-income first time homebuyers.

Depending on the individual within 6-10 months, trainees are ready to be either job-placed, enroll in institutions of higher education, and/or join a union. Graduates have gone on to Wentworth Institute, Lee Kennedy Construction, the Boston Housing Authority, Suffolk University, Bovis Lend Lease and Continental Construction just to name a few. A graduate's average starting salary is $11.00 per hour, which is above Boston's living wage.

UBuild Service Partnerships

About UBuild

Work alongside YouthBuild Boston trainees to transform a local nonprofit! The UBuild Service Partners program is an opportunity for socially responsible groups to sponsor customized service projects that make a big impact. Through UBuild, organizations leverage YBB’s skilled project managers, building and landscaping professionals, and trainees to benefit a local charity or public space. Each collaborative project is designed to deliver the greatest value for each dollar given, and each hour volunteered.
YBB will work with you to find a local organization or cause that will be the focus of your UBuild Service Partnership, or you may suggest an agency of your preference. We will provide all planning, prep work, and materials for the project. During the service day, our expert staff and trainees will give your volunteers instruction, guidance, and support to ensure that the project makes a lasting positive impact.

A UBuild Service Partnership is a powerful experience. The benefits reach far beyond a single day of service. Each UBuild Service Partnership facilitates a bond between YouthBuild Boston and another local organization, yielding long-term benefits for the community. Your organization and employees serve as a catalyst for this bond, helping two nonprofits, their missions, and the people that they serve.

Our corporate service partners include Bank of America, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA, Boston Private Bank & Trust Co., and CB Richard Ellis–New England. Recent UBuild projects have supported the vitally important work of homeless shelters, community health centers, and other local agencies.

Leverage our professionals and trainees to accomplish projects that make a difference
Engage your employees in a collaborative, meaningful, teambuilding activity
Reinforce your group's values or community ties through a corresponding service project
Increase your organization's visibility within the community
You can choose the service project, or we can provide options for you
