After rebuilding over 100 homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina though the
YouthBuild AmeriCorps Rebuilding Project, YouthBuild USA helped to establish a permanent YouthBuild AmeriCorps program in Gulfport, Mississippi. The YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulf Coast program serves the Gulf Coast community and engages Gulfport youth in the reconstruction of their community, as well as their own lives.
The YouthBuild Gulf Coast program provides 35 low-income, out-of-school, out-of-work young people with the opportunity to earn their GEDs, gain hands-on construction experience, receive a living allowance while learning, and obtain an AmeriCorps education award for post-secondary schooling.
The YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulf Coast program is funded by the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Services, Department of Labor, Wal-Mart Foundation, Home Depot, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Sam's Club, and other individual donors.
