After rebuilding over 150 homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina through the YouthBuild AmeriCorps Rebuilding Project, YouthBuild USA, Inc. helped to establish a permanent YouthBuild AmeriCorps program in Gulfport, Mississippi in July 2007. Now, through it’s partnership with the Biloxi Housing Authority, the YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulf Coast program aims to serve the Gulf coast community for the long-term and guide the participation of local youth, ages 16-24, in the on-going reconstruction of their community, as well as their lives, to include joint activities with the other YouthBuild programs and local community partners and agencies.
The YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulf Coast program provides 35 low-income, out-of-school, out-of-work young people with the opportunity to earn their GEDs, gain hands-on vocational [construction, health care, hospitality, & broadband fiber optics] training experience, get paid while learning, and obtain an AmeriCorps education award for post-secondary schooling.
The YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulf Coast program is funded by the Department of Labor, Corporation for National and Community Service "AmeriCorps", Wal-Mart Foundation, Knight Foundation, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, and other individual donors. In the past, Mississippi Commission on Volunteer Service; Mississippi Department of Human Services; AARP Foundation; Gulf Coast Community Action Agency, Inc.; Gulf Coast Community Foundation; Butler-Snow Foundation; and Home Depot Foundation have all supported the program.
