A Successful YouthBuild USA 2007 summer event in Cambridge, MA!

More than 150 YouthBuild students, graduates, and staff came to learn, connect, get inspired, and leave re-energized for their YouthBuild program work at the following events:

YouthBuild National Alumni Council Meeting Friday-Sunday, July 13-15
The National Alumni Council (NAC) is the peer-elected governing body of the YouthBuild USA National Alumni Association and a key decision-making group for the YouthBuild field. Graduates who serve on the NAC engage in important leadership roles: policy input to YouthBuild USA, advocacy, support for the National Alumni Association, support for local programs, activism and action, and self-development.

YouthBuild Young Leaders Council Meeting Sunday-Tuesday, July 15-17

The Young Leaders Council (YLC) is a peer-elected student leadership body for the Youth Build field.  YLC members launch their three-year terms as current students voted into office at YouthBuild's National Conference of Young Leaders.  YLC members represent their state in various national trainings and YouthBuild policy-making forums

Mid-Atlantic Northeast Regional Multisite Gathering Monday, July 16
This was an opportunity for programs to network with their YouthBuild Mid-Atlantic and New England regional peers.  This MultiSite Gathering offered program directors and staff an opportunity to share and learn from others within their regional area, as well as learn from YouthBuild USA staff about national resources to enhance their program.

Site Visit to YouthBuild Just A Start, Cambridge, MA Monday, July 16
Just A Start has a highly successful academic component offering students a chance to earn their GED or a high school diploma, and features a highly regarded portfolio process.

Fundamentals of YouthBuild Tuesday-Thursday, July 17-19
The Fundamentals of YouthBuild is an integral course for all new staff to YouthBuild programs. This training is designed as an introductory training to the fundamental components of a YouthBuild program.
The facilitators were:
John Bell, Vice President for Leadership Development, YouthBuild Academy for Transformation
Dave Burch, Consultant and Program Advisor
Jerry Kolker, Program Advisor, Consultant
Sangeeta Tyagi, National Director of Education, YouthBuild USA

National Schools Initiative Instructional Leadership Conference Tuesday-Wednesday, July 17-18
Across Youthbuild, programs educators are challenged in creating powerful educational environments for their students, often feeling torn in many different directions by the pressing needs of the young people: Should we focus on youth development? Counseling? Service? Mastering a trade? Passing the GED, Getting a Diploma? Ultimately, we face the question: What if this isn't enough?

More and more, Youthbuild students need to attend post-secondary education and training programs, realizing that their future earning power and life chances are directly related to their educational and career training achievements. As a result, many of us are working hard to re-tool our programs to address this new demand, without losing sight of the many important goals of Youthbuild programs.

This challenge is tremendous and can be overwhelming. The Youthbuild Instructional Leadership Institute is part of a year-long program designed to support programs in this work.
