Renewed and Re-energized at the YouthBuild Transformation Institute in Redondo Beach, CA!

More than 250, Directors, Program Managers, Teachers, Counselors, and Graduates attended the three events that constituted the YouthBuild Transformation Institute, April 13-19, 2007 in Redondo Beach, CA.

The events were as follows:

National Alumni Council Meeting
April 13-15, 2007

The National Alumni Council (NAC), the peer-elected governing body of the YouthBuild USA National Alumni Association and a key decision-making group for the YouthBuild field, met for a weekend for policy input to YouthBuild USA and work to begin planning for the annual Alumni Xchange gathering in October. YouthBuild West Multi-Site Gathering
April 16, 2007

As usual, the Multi-Site Gatherings (MSGs) proved to be enjoyable learning experiences for peers in a wide range of learning opportunities for ALL YouthBuild staff.  More than 50 attendees came to learning about the YouthBuild initiatives such as the Affiliated Network, Program Standards, Blueprint for Democracy, Design Apprenticeship Program, Individual Development Accounts, National Graduate Portal, and Sustainability & Coalition Building from numerous YouthBuild USA staff.  Attendees also had the opportunities to experience peer-led workshops including: Developing Vocational Construction Projects for Sustainability by David Shirah, Yuba County Office of Education; Practical Techniques and Approaches to Increase Youth Employment in Your Program by Layci Nelson, Tacoma Goodwill Industries; Pre-YouthBuild Programs by Garry Grady, Glide & RJ Guess, John Muir School; and a workshop called  Young People Speak Out: a session for YouthBuild students only by Tulaine Shabazz Marshall & Michelle Quinn-Davidson, YouthBuild USA.  In the afternoon attendees developed their own learning agenda using Open Space Technology techniques.  For more information on Multi-Site gatherings for 2007, contact Caroline Hopkins at chopkins@youthbuild.org.

The YouthBuild Academy for Transformation event included more than 200 attendees this April 2007.  A new element was choice of several 90-minute Transformation Topic sessions for peer sharing including:

  • Design Apprenticeship Program
  • Job Placement
  • Lessons from High Performing YouthBuild Sites
  • Racial Identity Development: Practical Applications
  • Recruitment, Selection, and Orientation
  • Substance Abuse
  • The State of the World &YouthBuild: What's the Connection?
  • Training Games & Experiential Activities,
  • Wealth Build: Money Management Curriculum
  • What is Adultism?

At the heart of the Academy are its courses.  This event offered several new and innovative courses including: Career Pathways for Graduate Success, Counseling: An Integrated Approach, Home Builders Institute PACT Certification Training, Introduction to YouthBuild Seminar, Leadership Development for Social Change, Mentoring for Transformation, Classroom Discipline Through Justice Not Punishment, Sustainability and YouthBuild New Grantees Orientation

The event also brought advice and personal stories from our keynote speaker, Antonio Ramirez, a 2000 YouthBuild Rockford graduate and current President of the YouthBuild National Alumni Council.

Additional plenary sessions included Transformation Practice Groups for individualized work; Graduate youth plenary lunch session using the "Theatre of the Oppressed"; and Many Colors Reception for socializing.
