Current YouthBuild Directors seeking Peer Support: check out this “Dear Director letter and FAQ” invitation for information on how to secure peer support requests.
Former YouthBuild Executive Directors, Program Directors and Managers:
You are invited to join the YouthBuild Support Network (YBSN) composed of former YB staff who continue our interest and/or involvement in YouthBuild initiatives. Download the YBSN flyer.
Background: Many motivated YouthBuild staff, after retiring or leaving YouthBuild for other jobs, want to maintain contact and/or contribute to the YouthBuild movement. Some of us have formed the YBSN to welcome, link, and support our continued connection with YouthBuild.
Who is eligible: Former Program Directors or Managers and/or Executive Directors of local YouthBuild programs. (Other former YouthBuild staff may become eligible later.)
How to join:. Chose either BASIC or ACTIVE status on the YBSN enrollment form. Submit the YBSN enrollment form to let us know about your interests and skills. The enrollment can be downloaded here in Microsoft Word format.
With questions, contact Tim Parsons or Diane Jacquith at ybsn.peersupport@gmail.com. Tim initiated the YBSN with a team of former YouthBuild directors.
Choose from two categories of YBSN Membership:
BASIC members who:
-
Are eligible to attend YouthBuild USA conferences and workshops on a reduced fee-paying basis;
-
May opt to receive relevant emails such as: a) communications from YouthBuild USA President about the YouthBuild movement, b) upcoming YouthBuild conferences and workshops, c) YBSN planning and opportunities, and/or d) how to add our voices to YouthBuild USA advocacy initiatives;
-
May join periodic conference calls to help shape the future of YBSN;
-
Receive mailings inviting your tax-deductible contributions to YouthBuild USA.
ACTIVE members may choose to (in addition to the above):
-
Describe your interests and skills for special projects and roles (see examples below)
-
Be added to the YBSN talent pool available for special initiatives, advocacy, and/or National Directors' Association committee work (see examples of "projects" below);
-
Be eligible for YBSN tasks that match your skills and interests with YouthBuild's needs for specialized TA and training;
-
Access other opportunities as we develop them…
Projects and roles for ACTIVE members: Roles already performed by former directors include:
-
Technical assistance (TA) and training in specialized areas that match our interests with YouthBuild needs;
-
National advocacy (e.g., assist with youth voter engagement efforts, serve on the Government Relations Committee, contact Congressional representatives);
-
International outreach (current links include Canada, Mexico, Europe and South Africa)
-
Advisors to National Directors' Association (NDA) committees which currently include: Bylaws, Development, Government Relations, Technical Assistance, and Technology (past areas have included career development and collective purchasing);
-
Disaster relief planning and implementation (YouthBuild's hurricane Katrina relief)
-
Curriculum development (Blueprint for Democracy: Youth Voter Engagement)
Dream! Identify your interests and skills that would meet needs of the YouthBuild movement.
Screening of ACTIVE members: Active members wishing to serve in specialized peer technical assistance roles will be screened through the process designed by Lissette Rodriguez (VP for Field Development) and the TA Committee for applicants to the peer TA pool. Those wishing to provide service to NDC/NDA committees or special projects are subject to approval of the NDC or appropriate YouthBuild USA staff.
Opportunities and expectations: YBSN members are encouraged to take advantage of YouthBuild USA conferences and workshops (on reduced fee-paying basis). ACTIVE members are expected to keep current on YouthBuild policies and procedures that are relevant to the roles we carry out.
Compensation: ACTIVE members will be encouraged to perform services pro bono or receive expense reimbursements only. If paid, active members will be paid according to the regular peer TA rates, or hired and paid for special projects with funds available through YouthBuild USA.
Support network linkages: Regular conference calls open to YBSN members would be convened by Tim Parsons, in coordination with national TA and AffNet staff, to invite fresh ideas and effective communication. Regional TA staff who have active YBSN participants in their region would be invited to join these calls whenever appropriate. The National Directors' Council (NDC) may consider having representation from YBSN in a status similar to the current Director Emeritus role.
Questions Coordination: Tim Parsons, former executive director of YouthBuild Burlington, and Diane Jaquith, former executive director of Moreno Valley YouthBuild, are volunteering as the initial coordinators for YBSN.
