Eight Young Leaders Named Helene D. Stoneman Scholars in October 2006
In October of 2006, eight YouthBuild graduates became recipients of the 2006 Helene D. Stoneman Scholarship and Civic Leadership Program Award, which recognizes young leaders for excellence in civic engagement, community leadership, and academic achievement, with special emphasis on students' academic promise.
Each of the Stoneman Scholars received $2,000 to assist with their college education. The eight Stoneman Scholars are:
- Joshua Basl, YouthBuild Just A Start (Cambridge, MA)
- Ashley Charwood, Bi-Cap YouthBuild (Bemidji, MN)
- Gabrielle Correia, YouthBuild Just A Start (Cambridge, MA)
- Joshua Garcia, LA CAUSA YouthBuild (Los Angeles, CA)
- Amanda Guzman, Youth Action YouthBuild (East Harlem, NY)
- Sikina Lee, YouthBuild St. Louis (St. Louis MO)
- Johnese McFail, LAYC YouthBuild Public Charter School (Washington, DC)
- Francisco Medrano, MAAC Project YouthBuild (Chula Vista, CA)
Additionally, the eight Stoneman Scholars and the 10 other 2006 Stoneman Scholar applicants will receive $1,000 gift from the YouthBuild Asset Trust to be used as matching funds for their Individual Development Account in the YouthBuild National IDA Program.
