Nearly 100 young people and staff representing 7 YouthBuild programs in 3 states gathered at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio to participate in the Appalachian Green Pathways Service-Learning Event. The two-day event, held June 30-July 1, 2010, was organized by YouthBuild USA and funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The event offered training in green economy topics, a tour of the Hocking College Energy Institute, and a hands-on service day in Wayne National Forest. Speakers included Fred Deel, Executive Director of the Ohio Governor’s Office on Appalachia; Tony Logan, Ohio State Director, USDA Rural Development; Dr. Jerrold Hutton, Dean of Hocking College Logan Campus; Amy Mackey, Raccoon Creek Watershed Coordinator, Ohio University; and Jo Santiago of Flying Higher, a wildlife biologist and expert on raptors based in Elkins, West Virginia.
